I have been growing rice on six acres of land for over 20 years in Tripuraram village in Telangana’s Nalgonda district, with traditional method of paddy cultivation. Along with extensive water consumption, which posed various other challenges like labour shortage and high labour cost for manually transplanting seedlings. Additionally, maintaining a constant water level in the field until harvest was a challenge. Each summer is hotter and water scarcity in our region is becoming a real problem affecting agricultural production and the lives of local citizens. Starting with one acre of land in 2022, and witnessing the benefits of DSR, I have expanded the practice to all six acres of her land as well as four acres of my brother’s land. This transition helped me save Rs 60,000 per year just in labour costs and significant reduction on water consumption.

I have been engaged in farming for the last 10 years, growing an average of 40-45 bags of paddy every year. Since last year I have adopted AWD system to irrigate my farms. The crop was good crop, I could get an average of 47 bags per acre through the AWD method. My neighboring farmer teased me on not flooding my fields continuously and I may incur crop loss. Irrespective of his remarks I continued with AWD practice sand my yield was better than last time. The reason for all this is the AWD system I have adopted. It is not important that we harvest 50-60 bags, adopting the AWD system will be gift to our future generations with better land. It is a matter of pride. All farmers can create a better environment naturally by following this method, thus they can continue to be the backbone of our country.
